A week ago or so I took a 2-mile walk and listened to this podcast from Mark Driscoll.  It has really messed me up (in a good way) and challenged me.  Please take the time to listen and feel free to comment.

An Incredible Truth from the Book of Acts

-
I have been a follower of Jesus for 43 years now. Amazing.  I have been a Pastor for 33 years.  I have one of the best seminary degrees in the world (an M.Div. from Talbot Seminary) and an almost (ha ha) D. Min. from TEDS in Chicago.  You would think that I would know what I am about to share with you....but I missed it, completely missed it. Here it is: In the Book of Acts, there are 30 accounts of conversion.  In 90% of those cases, it is NOT individual conversion-- it is family, group or mass decisions!  There are only 3 cases of individual conversion in Acts (Saul/Paul (Acts 9) , the Ethiopian Eunuch (8:35), and Sergius Paulus (13:12).  90% of the conversions in the Book of Acts happened in mass.  That is difficult to imagine in the west because we are highly individualized in our thinking.  We hear of "people movements" in other parts of the world- whole tribes coming to faith in Jesus and we wonder how that could possibly be genuine-- bu...

A Shout Out to Las Vegas Pastors, Pt. 1

-
When we came to Las Vegas in the summer of 2000, one of the first things I did was to attempt to reach out to other Pastors and Leaders in the Las Vegas valley.  It has been a remarkable blessing.  (Young leaders take note:  networking with other leaders will be worth 100x the time you put into reaching out.  Do NOT follow the example of many leaders of sticking to themselves, believing too much in yourself and your ways and missing the blessing of knowing and learning from others).   In fifteen years I have never had a Pastor/Leader blow me off.  Even though we came here to plant a church, no one seemed threatened by us or in competition.   So here are some specific praises for specific leaders.  I am so afraid I am going to forget somebody!  In some but no particular order: Shane Philip, The Crossing .  Shane was speaking at Central Christian on a Sunday morning at their new Henderson campus in the spring of 2000 when we were figur...

Why are there Millions of Sea Creatures Buried in the Grand Canyon?

There are some advantages and disadvantages to living in the desert southwest of the United States.  Advantage #1 - it's sunny most of the year (320 days or more) and it never rains.  Houston, Texas (and many other places) can get more rain in one day than we get in one year if that tells you anything.  Disadvantage #1 - the 320 sunny days make it VERY hot for about four months out of the year.   Advantage #2 - We live near one of the greatest geological exhibits in all the world-  The Grand Canyon and the Great Basin.   Lately, I have become rather fascinated and intrigued (my wife might say obsessed, but really it's not that bad) with the geology, history, and beauty of the Grand Canyon and some of the lesser known areas of the southwest.  I fell in love with the Canyon when, as a college student, I hiked to the bottom of the GC and stayed with the Havasupai people.  Havasupai means "people of the blue green waters" as they have one of the mos...
